Course summary
This course covers the archaeology and history of Ancient Egypt as well as its languages, including Coptic and Demotic; students acquire detailed knowledge of the cultures of Ancient Egypt, emphasising historical archaeology, landscape and the built environment, art, and the language and/or literature of Ancient Egypt; the course is appropriate for students who are prepared for graduate work and who wish to undertake research in the field of Ancient Egypt, but who need further training in either the language(s) or the archaeology of the region; students may choose either an archaeology or linguistic emphasis.
Modules
Modules on offer include: Introduction to Egyptian language; advanced Egyptian language; Coptic; demotic; landscapes, built environment, and material culture of ancient Egypt; historical archaeology of ancient Egypt I; historical archaeology of ancient Egypt II; topics in Egyptology; or any other MPhil module offered in the division of archaeology (with consent of the module's instructor and the MPhil in Egyptology coordinator).
Assessment method
Assessment method is dependent on module selection but may include essays, reports, book reviews, laboratory projects, research designs, oral presentations and written examinations. All MPhil students are required to produce a dissertation of maximum 15,000 words which constitutes 50 percent of the student’s final mark.
Entry requirements
High 2.1 Honours degree in a relevant subject or equivalent qualification. An IELTS score of 7.5.

The Division of Archaeology enters exceptionally strong MPhil candidates for Gates Cambridge, CHESS and AHRC scholarships and scholarship schemes administered by the Cambridge Trust. The Division of Archaeology also administers several funds which aim to support Archaeological fieldwork, Egyptology and Assyriology at MPhil level and will endeavour to support students in obtaining funding from University and external sources.
