Course summary

This MSc in Maritime Engineering Science Programme covers the core subjects of Maritime Engineering for both the design and analysis of marine craft and structures within the marine environment. You can choose from five pathways, each covers a broad context alongside an in-depth specialisation of your choice. On the Naval Architecture pathway, you'll get detailed insight into core naval architecture subject areas, such as resistance and propulsion, maritime structures, manoeuvring, hydrodynamics and materials. This course is ideal if you are a graduate or professional with an engineering, scientific or mathematical background, and want to pursue a career in the maritime sector. Specialist knowledge of the discipline isn't essential, as we'll provide you with an introductory module to the fundamentals of Ship Science.

Modules

Compulsory modules include: Fundamentals of Maritime Engineering; Maritime Safety: Risk, Environment and Law; MSc Research Project; Zero Carbon Ship Resistance and Propulsion; Marine Hydrodynamics; Marine Structures in Fluids. Optional modules include: Applications of CFD; Design Search and Optimisation (DSO) - Principles, Methods, Parameterizations and Case Studies; Finite Element Analysis in Solid Mechanics; Marine Structures; Ship Manoeuvering and Control; Yacht and High-Performance Craft; Offshore Engineering and Analysis; Renewable Energy from Environmental Flows: Wind, Wave and Tide; Failure of Materials and Components. How to apply

International applicants

If English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate your English ability by meeting our Band C requirements: IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all components. For information on other accepted English language tests, please see our website.

Entry requirements

You'll need a 2.1 degree in marine/maritime engineering, naval architecture, ship science, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, physics or maths, yacht or powercraft design.
