Course summary

Our Strength and Conditioning MSc provides the knowledge, skills and experience to enable you to develop athletes across the spectrum of athletic achievement, from participation to high performance. The programme provides bespoke research-informed modules to develop your knowledge of all topics relevant to strength and conditioning. The programme capitalises on the University's sporting strengths to offer hands-on coaching experience, designed to give you the tools to develop athletic performance at the highest level. You will focus on the science and practice of strength and conditioning, as well as the fundamental science underpinning performance adaptations. You will also immerse yourself in the strength and conditioning environment and have the opportunity to apply for an extended coaching placement with either Loughborough University performance athletes or external sport partners. The programme culminates in a substantial independent research project, allowing you to apply the knowledge and techniques you have learned to answer a scientific question relevant to strength and conditioning that will further develop your understanding. Previous students have undertaken projects investigating: neural and morphological factors that contribute towards strength tasks and sports performance; the use of strength training to enhance factors that underpin endurance performance; the effects of single-limb resistance training on the magnitude of inter-limb transfer of strength; the physiological bases of task failure during exercise testing and muscular endurance performance; and the use of blood flow restriction in rehabilitation and performance. In undertaking our master's in strength and conditioning, you will be joining the number one ranked institution for sports-related subjects in the world (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022) and a sporting landscape that is without parallel in any other UK university. Who should study this programme? This programme is ideal for students aspiring to work with people at all levels of sport, from participation to elite sport, applying strength and conditioning knowledge and cutting-edge research to achieve peak potential.

You will be assessed by a combination of coursework, oral presentations, exams, laboratory reports and a case study essay.
