Course summary

Postgraduate Research is a central element of the activities of the Classics Department. We have an international postgraduate community of nearly 50 MPhil/PhD students altogether, working on an extraordinarily wide range of topics in Greek and Latin, ancient history and archaeology, philosophy, rhetoric and the reception of ancient literature. The Department of Classics at Royal Holloway is committed to the production of world class research engaged with contemporary cultural issues. The Department engages research across a broad sweep of periods, study areas, and methodologies. These include archaeology, ancient history, Classical literatures and languages, ancient philosophy, and the modern reception of Classical antiquity. Departmental staff supervise research students and conduct research in all these fields. Departmental research is fully integrated with the University of London (through the Institute of Classical Studies), the College, and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The Department hosts three major research groupings, the Centre for the Reception of Greece and Rome (CRGR), Centre for Oratory and Rhetoric (COR) and the Centre for Archaeo-Architectural Reconstruction (CAAR).
