Course summary

The socio-cultural study of sport has become ever more significant. Drawing upon two major areas of study within the socio-cultural study of sport, this degree focuses upon the sociology and ethics (philosophy) of sport, distinguishing this from other socio-cultural related sport programmes. The course content is informed by current and innovative research and has been praised for its scope and flexibility in assessment that allows students to pursue and develop individual interests. In most cases students' crafting of these ideas are applied to future career aspirations. Possible exit points - MSc/PgD/PgC

Modules

Core Modules: Social Issues and Sporting Experience Research Methods for Sport (Qualitative pathway) Changing Practice in Sport and Physical Culture Sport and Morality Equality and Justice in Sport Independent Study Dissertation In order to qualify for the MA, students are required to successfully complete a 15,000 word dissertation project.​ If you choose to undertake your dissertation module through the medium of Welsh, you could be eligible for a Scholarship.

Assessment method

The main methods of assessment are varied 5000 word (or equivalent) coursework assignments and presentations.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

  • Course does not award QTS

Entry requirements

​Applicants should normally have one of the following: An honours degree (2.1 or above ) in a sport or leisure related area appropriate to the pathway ​Candidates with exceptional and extensive work experience in education, coaching, leisure management or recreation will also be considered for entry to the pathway. ​ An honours degree (2.1 or above) in an alternative discipline area that is acceptable to the programme leader.
