Weymouth and Kingston Maurward College, brings together two Further and Higher Education colleges to make one strong, responsive and ambitious organisation with the vision, resources and expertise to best support the evolving and growing skills demands in the region and beyond. Located on the stunning Jurassic Coast and the beautiful Dorset countryside, our campuses offer a diverse range of courses, training and CPD that cater to a wide array of interests, career paths and business needs. Across our two campuses we offer full and part-time higher education courses, with Weymouth focussing on vocational courses such as art, media, performing arts, health and social care, sport and public services and Kingston Maurward specialising in land-based courses covering subjects such as agriculture, wildlife, ecology and conservation. This course is delivered on the Weymouth campus. Computer animation is arguably the most successful application of digital technology in the creative sector. It provides an exciting, flexible medium for creating incredible films. It has revolutionised the world of special effects and is integral to the billion-dollar computer game industry. Interest in careers in 3D Modelling and Animation (especially as they apply to games) is high. The qualifications provide a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in their sector and their national recognition by employers allows direct progression to employment. This course is designed to present opportunities to students to work with a range of techniques and technologies, producing work for a variety of clients and platforms. This approach allows students to experiment in several diverse sectors of the creative industries and informs crucial individual decisions regarding further training, education or employment. Students will develop an array of academic, practical and interpersonal skills and undertake a substantial work placement project in an aspect of the industry of their choice, and as a result of this and other industry related tasks, they will come into contact with and work with local employers.
Modules
The Higher National Certificate (HNC) is a Level 4 qualification made up of 120 credits. The Higher National Diploma (HND) is a Level 4 and Level 5 qualification made up of 240 credits. Year 1 Level 4 Module A: Process & Practice The learning and teaching for this module integrate Essential Content across two Assessment Units: A1: Concept & Development (85 credits) A2: Creative Project (35 credits) Year 2 Level 5 Module B: Professional Creative Practice The learning and teaching for this module integrate Essential Content across two Assessment Units: B1: Personal Professional Development (45 credits) B2: Professional Project (75 credits)
Assessment method
The course is predominantly assessed through the completion of assignment projects. Much of the study will require work outside of formal classes, so self-motivation and good time management skills are essential. As a guideline you are advised that a 15-credit unit approximates to a learning time of 150 hours.
