Course summary

This HND Fashion & Textiles course is a highly creative, design-led course that embraces all aspects of surface decoration; fabric construction, embellishment, print, drawing and design development related to fashion, textiles, and interior design. This includes embroidery, print, knit, and weave. Students will explore and develop professional technical skills and processes as well as professional presentation and portfolio skills. The course is taught by a dedicated team of professionals with a breadth of experience within the creative industries. Students will work in dedicated textiles studios and learn to respond to project briefs and present their work and outcomes in a professional and collaborative way. Students will learn a broad range of skills that will be applicable to a variety of creative career pathways, in creative textile development, mixed media drawing, embellished (hand and machine embroidery), printed, constructed textiles (fabric manipulation, knit and weave), communication skills, promotional and marketing skills. Techniques and processes will explore traditional and non-traditional materials. Digital imaging and its application in design is taught and encouraged using the latest Adobe software as well as using digital embroidery machines and laser cutter. What can I do next? Students can progress onto the third year of a degree in a relevant subject. Learners have progressed into the textile industry working for luxury fabric interior companies, freelance work, teacher training, working within the theatre costume industry. Example job roles include, Surface Pattern Designer, Textile Designer, Interior Designer, Weaver, Embroiderer, Knitwear Designer, Inhouse Designer, Freelance Designer.

Portfolio

You are required to submit an art portfolio that demonstrates your art and design skills and understanding of the creative process. Applications will be considered from those who do not meet the academic requirements if they can demonstrate some experience in the textile/fashion industry or in art and design, or hold a Foundation in Art / Design or Access to HE Art and Design course.

Sponsorship information

The Principal’s Higher Education Scholarship is open to students who are starting the first year of a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) at New College Swindon. There is one scholarship awarded per academic year. The scholarship will cover the full tuition fees for either an HNC/HND programme. There are no restrictions on the duration of study (part-time or full-time)
