Dietitians make a vital contribution to people's health and wellbeing. You’ll develop skills in critical evaluation and adaptability to prepare for the changing dynamics of working in health and social care. As part of this course, you’ll: • Explore the composition of food, the nature of nutrients and their metabolism in the body, nutritional requirements throughout the lifespan and the dietary effects of food on health • Learn how to work alongside service users with acute and chronic disease in hospitals and primary care settings • Prepare to meet the responsibilities and expectations associated with being a healthcare professional • Consider the ethical and legal boundaries arising from exercising a professional duty of care Occupational Health clearance and compliance with standard NHS immunisations requirements is mandatory and essential for placement attendance. Professionally regulated The HCPC (Health & Care Professions Council) regulates dietetics. The title of Dietitian is protected by law. This means that anyone who uses this designated title must be on the HCPC Register. Successful completion of this course will give you the eligibility to apply for registration with the HCPC after you graduate. This course is also accredited by BDA (The British Dietetic Association). Entry requirements
The academic entry requirements for the MSc Dietetics are for a science degree with at least a 2:1 classification which contains sufficient level and depth of biochemistry and human physiology as well as research skills and methodology. We require biochemistry and human physiology to be studied to at least level 4 and an integration and application of these two subject areas to be studied to at least level 5. Research skills are also required to be studied to level 6 including a research project or dissertation. You are encouraged to use the full 1000 word count, but do not exceed this, to relate your experiences to the required criteria, which are: -A commitment to dietetics and working as a dietitian in the NHS and how this has developed. -An awareness of the varied role and duties of a dietitian in different settings. -Developing communication skills and evidence of experiences where communication skills have been used or adapted for people from a range of backgrounds. -Demonstrating an interest in and ability to work with people in a care setting and recognise own strengths and weaknesses for working in this environment. -An interest and enjoyment of food,including basic food preparation and cooking skills and exposure to the diversity and enjoyment of food in a multi-cultural society. -Evidence of overcoming obstacles or challenges in your personal or professional life. At interview you will be tested on the values and behaviour which promote quality care and a positive patient, staff and student experience. The interview is the final selection process and shortlisted candidates will be offered either a virtual or a face to face interview according to current government guidance. This will include a discussion based on the core values and behaviours of the NHS Constitution. All applications should be supported by two references, references should be accompanied by a covering letter on headed paper or emailed directly from the referee.
