Course summary
Course overview This programme will help you to develop the specialist skills and knowledge necessary to excel within the dynamic fields of sports coaching, sports development, and fitness sectors. This will enable you to grow and adapt to the public, sport, and fitness demand within the industry. The programme covers three key industry strands: sports coaching, fitness instructing, and community development of sport/physical activity. The programme structure is bespoke with regard to the diversity of the content covered: traditionally, students follow either a sports coaching, fitness, or sports science route. Furthermore, the programme offers the opportunity to attain a multitude of industry recognised coaching and fitness qualifications which enhance employability. These include Active IQ Gym/Personal Training and coaching certificates such as, but not limited to, Level 2 Football, Basketball, and Gymnastics. The programme has been developed with assistance from relevant employers, ensuring the programme content is valid and current. Industry relevant skills and tasks are embedded as assessment methods with a view to generating employment-ready graduates.

The most directly relevant entry qualification is the Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching, Development & Fitness. Where applicants apply with qualifications that are not directly relevant, the Programme Team looks for evidence of experience. Applications from students with non-standard entry qualifications are welcome. Admission tutors also take into account any alternative qualifications or other experience applicants may offer. Non-standard qualifications in a related discipline may be considered together with the need to demonstrate the academic rigour required to study at Level 5/6. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate industry experience and enthusiasm at interview.
