Equine Science and Veterinary Bioscience at IBERS Aberystwyth means studying the biology of a range of animal species in such a way as to provide you with the underpinning veterinary medicine and scientific theory and examples using the horse (including some equine-specific modules) are used where possible. This includes how nutrition, welfare, anatomy and physiology as well as understanding diseases, their diagnosis and control. Students on this course benefit from the superb teaching facilities and modern laboratories. The University has over 1000ha of Farmland and its own Equine Centre that has an Olympic size indoor arena. Students on this course will use our advanced microscopy and bioimaging laboratory. Our location is very much unique to other Universities, we are found on a stunning coastal location, with miles of unspoilt beaches to gallop upon from the Equine Centre. In addition, students on this course will have the opportunity to undertake their BHS exams during their course. If you’re feeling adventurous, why not take the chance to study abroad during your degree? We have exchange agreements with universities in Europe, USA, and elsewhere, so you can apply to spend all or part of your 2nd year studying veterinary biosciences overseas. You will miss Aberystwyth, but you’ll love the new perspectives that international study can bring! Although this course does not provide recognised training for those wishing to practise as a veterinary surgeon, it does, however, provide graduates with a suitable pathway to a veterinary medicine degree programme. Upon completion of this degree, students will be equipped with the core skills that employers are seeking, which makes the transition from campus to career a smoother process. Graduates from IBERS have explored careers in: Research science; Nutritional companies; Pharmaceuticals. Others have progressed and undertaken MSc and PhD qualifications.

Additional fee information

Based on the latest information available to us, for new Home students enrolled on full-time undergraduate and PGCE courses starting in 2020, Aberystwyth University currently intends to charge a tuition fee of £9,000 for the academic year 2020/21. The Welsh Government is still to finalise arrangements for 2020/21 onwards, which means that for students starting in 2020/21 or after, tuition fees may rise for any successive years of study, mapped according to any inflation-linked maximum tuition fee permitted by the Welsh Government. These increases would also apply for the proportional fees charged for Year Abroad and Year in Industry. We will inform all applicants and students of the fee levels for 2020/21 and any inflation-linked increases for successive years of study as soon as confirmation is received from Welsh Government, and we will publish updates on our website. We recommend you check the updated fee information before applying. Up to date details of the relevant fees will be set out in our offer documentation, and your terms and conditions with us will describe how we may be entitled to increase or otherwise change fees during the period of your study with us. Costs not included in the tuition fee: The academic provision of the University includes certain elements of study away from Aberystwyth. These involve activities such as field trips in science degrees and visits to theatres, galleries and museums in humanities-based courses. The additional costs of such activities are not included in the overall University fee and you should, therefore, note the need to budget for them. Details of courses that have additional costs can be found on the Aberystwyth University website. These costs are given as an indication of likely cost and will vary as will the location and duration of the activity. Fuller details will be available from the department organising the activity.
