Ancient and Medieval History explores and examines civilisations that may appear distant but remain influential even today, and studying this three-year BA degree with a Year in Industry opens up a range of exciting career opportunities by helping you develop skills, which are highly valued by employers. You’ll have the chance to explore the history of Europe and Mediterranean regions from the ancient Athenians and Persians to the Crusades, and from the Roman Empire to the medieval kingdoms of England and France as well as the Welsh ‘age of the princes’, taking a variety of historical and archaeological approaches. We are based in our stunning Singleton Park campus, in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula. The University advocates for only paid placements which on average have a salary of over £20,000. Unpaid placements are considered on a case-by-case basis. The first year of your degree includes two compulsory modules and four optional modules, with choices typically including Greek History and Society, Gods and Heroes, Greek, Latin, and a Field Trip.

Modules

The first year of your degree includes two compulsory modules and four optional modules, with choices typically including Greek History and Society, Gods and Heroes, Greek, Latin, and a Field Trip. Year 2 is made up of one compulsory module and five optionals, with your choice of topics typically including Archaic Greece, The Heirs of Rome, a Schools Placement teaching ancient history and languages, and the Anglo-Norman World. Year three will be spent on your Year in Industry, on placement, where you will be able to learn valuable professional skills, and can gain practical experience ready for your career. Your fourth year includes a wide variety of optional modules, which can include Pompeii and the Cities of Vesuvius, Culture and Control in Roman Britain, advanced levels of Greek or Latin, and a compulsory Dissertation.

We offer a variety of assessment methods within our programmes. For applicants whose first language is not English, we require a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component) or equivalent English test.

Qualification requirements

Our standard entry requirement is ABB-BBC (UCAS tariff points 112-128) or equivalent. All offers are made following a review of the application form, predicted/achieved grades and subjects, the reference and personal statement. We also accept a range of advanced level qualifications including: International Baccalaureate 32; Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales- grade equivalent to A-level; Access to Higher Education and Open University qualifications, and Extended Project.
