Course summary
This Foundation Degree in Art is a two year full-time course (or four years part-time) with six 120 credit modules in each academic year. This programme will provide you with the technical and theoretical foundation to undertake a range of creative careers in the Film and Media production industry. It will challenge you to show innovation and creativity in the creation of media content, whilst developing your practical skills to complete moving image productions to a professional standard. The technical aspects will be underpinned with the theoretical and contextual knowledge required at this level, providing you with the academic skills needed to research and investigate topics relevant to your projects and productions. Finally, the requirement to complete collaborative projects and work-based experience which will provide further vocational focus to your learning, whilst giving you the opportunity to realise your own ideas and work within your own specialism. The programme is delivered by experienced practising media professionals and academics, all of whom have a wide range of skills and relevant industry experience. The School of Art encourages enrichment in all aspects of its delivery, including guest lectures, live briefs with external companies, trips and a comprehensive induction programme. This will hugely enhance your experience and give further vocational context to the techniques and theories you have learnt. Bradford was the world first UNESCO city of film, due to its rich film making heritage and inspirational movie making locations. This is a permanent title and gives international recognition to its status within the film making community. Recent productions made in the Bradford district include ‘The Duke’, ‘Gunpowder’ and ‘Peaky Blinders’. There are also numerous smaller film production companies that have made Bradford their home, potentially providing graduates with a valuable network to help support their employment prospects once they have completed the programme. The media production facilities are of a professional standard, giving you access to both industry standard filming and editing equipment. Our fully equipped TV studio provides the opportunity to practice and experiment with the techniques you have been taught. There are four Apple Mac suites all equipped with the full Adobe Creative suite.
Modules
Year 1 (Level 4): • Contemporary Video Production - You will gain an insight into techniques that Directors and Cinematographers use when creating footage both in the utilisation of the camera and the decisions they make ‘dressing’ a scene. You will analyse shot types and camera movement as well as the use of certain lighting or costume. • Sound and Lighting Techniques for Film and TV - Introduction to the sound and lighting design process. Gain the skills to plan and run sound and lighting for a variety of film and tv production scenarios. Combining theory and practice this is a hands-on module that will introduce you to systems, protocols and safety. • Narrative Storytelling (20) - You will have the opportunity to explore different genres; generate ideas; carry out appropriate research; draft, revise and present scripts / narrative devices in a range of formats. • Techniques and Processes in Editing (20) - Introduction to essential elements of film editing and enables you to explore the application of new strategies and competences to work in a professional context. You will learn on professional editing software using industry standard programmes. • Collaboration, Teams and Techniques (20) - Insight into collaboration between key film & television departments. You will develop professional thinking and key production communication techniques across various departments (these may include, costume, props, set, production and location management). • Creative Industries Context (20) - You'll learn the key contextual and theoretical debates. It will develop your understanding of contextual approaches to the creative industries in order to inform your own practice and set it within a wider historical, social economic and political context. Year 2 (Level 5): • Directing and Cinematography (20) - Develop your knowledge and understanding of the role of the Director and the art of Cinematography. The module will emphasise the cooperation and interaction of various disciplines and the importance of Directors’ ability to communicate their ideas. You will be provided with an insight into the demands placed on writers, producers and actors, and the critical importance of working collaboratively. • Documentary Production (20) - Documentary is a key area of the Film and TV industries and can provide a creative and diverse approach to the development of moving image productions. Develop your knowledge and understanding of the key issues regarding the production of documentary productions. • Collaborative Project (20) - This module is undertaken by all the students in the second year of the programme. Due to the collaborative nature of the film industry, it is essential that you develop the skills required to work alongside other practitioners from the creative industry in the development and delivery of a professional level project. • Work-Based Experience (20) - Experience the scope and depth of learning which may take place in a work-based context by planning, monitoring and evaluating the work experience. Examples of work placement could be with a theatre company, a TV production company, delivering subject specific workshops or classes or community based arts. It will also provide you with an opportunity to explore new or different skills through practical experience in the industry. • Creative Industries Context 2 (20) - Introduction to key contextual and theoretical debates. It will develop your understanding of contextual approaches to the creative industries in order to inform your own practice and set it within a wider historical, social economic and political context. • Creative Industries Professional Practice and Entrepreneurship (20) - This module supports professional practice activities towards working in the creative economy. You will develop a progression plan and learn about current professional practice-related trends and debates within your discipline to help you direct your career.
