Course summary

Sharpen your journalistic skills and engage with the latest communication tools and technology. You’ll have the expertise to impress employers and to pursue your freelance career. Develop the skillset you’ll need to build a successful career in journalism. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re an experienced reporter, this course will enable you to explore a changing industry. As part of this course, you’ll:

  • Enhance your ability to write well and to tell compelling stories
  • Develop your understanding of the very latest communication tools and technology
  • Explore social media, search engine optimisation, crowd sourcing and user-generated content
  • Study the traditional media platforms of newspapers, television and radio
  • Work placements
You’ll be encouraged to get hands-on journalism experience. We have contacts with an array of media organisations who can offer invaluable work placements and employment opportunities. This was the first journalism course in England to be taught from within a business school and you’ll benefit from our experience and our industry contacts. You’ll take advantage of these links as you report on the latest stories and developments in a thriving city and beyond. Employability and placements office We have a dedicated and supportive team to help you access a wide range of vacancies from local, national and international employers. Pre-placement guidance and seminars are available on topics such as:

You’ll undertake a weekly Professional Journalism Development module designed to prepare you for a career in the media industry. This will include weekly industry masterclasses, help with placements and sessions devoted to getting your work published. Entry requirements

A 2nd Class Honours degree in a related subject or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum 6.5 in each component) or equivalent.
