The Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education is ideal for newly-appointed lecturers in higher education and researchers with teaching responsibilities.

  • The aim of the programme is to develop participants’ approaches to effective teaching, learning, assessment and evaluation practices in a higher education context. In addition, the programme supports the development of the scholarship of learning and teaching.
  • The programme of study will focus on the delivery of Level 4 and above programmes on the Qualifications and Credits Framework (QCF) and the wider context of supporting learning and teaching in higher education.
  • The programme is aligned to Descriptor 2 of the UK Professional Standards Framework (Advance HE) and on successful completion of the programme, participants can claim professional recognition as a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

Modules

The programme is delivered over the course of one academic year at Wrexham University. The two modules are aligned to the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) and enable participants to reflect upon their own practice, learn from sharing practice with others and develop a deep understanding of the educational models that support learning and teaching in higher education. Assessment method

Assessment is 100% coursework. Students on the course must be employed within the HE sector and have a substantive teaching role. Assessments include:

  • A micro-teach to peers.
  • An observation of the participant’s practises in HE.
  • A reflective essay that critically evaluates the participants’ learning, teaching and assessment practice.
  • A critical study into an applied area of academic practice is designed to enhance the participants’ practice and support student learning.

Applicants will normally be expected to have an undergraduate degree in their own discipline and access to regular teaching in a higher educational institution.
