Course summary

The Public Health and Specialist Community Nursing (SCPHN/SPQ) programme prepares you to practise independently as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor or School Nurse) or Community Nurse Specialist (Community Nursing in Health and Social Care, Community Children’s Nurse, District Nurse or General Practice Nurse). The programme of study takes you through a specialist community public health or community nursing specialist trajectory which allows you to consider health attainment, promotion, and illness prevention in the context of local, regional, national and international public health, health and social care policy and practice. You will learn about the latest theory and practice influencing service provision and critically evaluate approaches to developing and delivering effective services to enhance your role. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in: Critical analysis, evaluation, and synthesis The integration of research and theory to practice Leadership Clinical risk assessment and risk management Developing / strengthening awareness of equality and diversity. Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) This PGDip SCPHN pathways component of the programme are designed to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (the NMC) proficiencies for SCPHN (NMC 2022) leading to registerable qualifications in either: Health Visiting School Nursing Community Nursing Specialist Practice Qualifications (SPQ) The PGDip SPQ pathway components of the programme are designed to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) proficiencies for community nursing specialist practice qualifications (SPQ) (NMC 2022) leading to a recordable qualification in one of the following: Community Children’s Nursing Community Nursing in Health and Social Care District Nursing General Practice Nursing It is recognised that the students who commence the programme are unique and from a diverse range of backgrounds, with existing experience and attitudes to life. The emphasis on transferable skills in the curriculum ensures that the rich resources you bring to your learning are nurtured and developed. At City St George’s, University of London you will have the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes in public health and community settings that are characterised by ethnic diversity, high levels of deprivation with some of the most acute health care challenges in the UK. To meet these challenges, the programme will help you to be flexible and proactive and develop a sound evidence-based knowledge, enabling you to question or challenge with confidence and courage.


Entry requirements

UK In accordance with NMC and University requirements, in order to be eligible for entry in to the programme, applicants are required to meet the following entry requirements: Applicants will have a second class or above (2:2 classification) honours degree in a relevant subject from an approved higher education institution. Clinically experienced, health professionals without a degree who have evidence of master’s level CPPD (level 7) study undertaken within the last five years will also be considered. Confirmation that you hold a current and satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Confirmation that either your employing organisation will support you to undertake the course and/or alternatively if you are self-funded/employed that you have access to: protected time to attend scheduled study and assessment days and engage in guided study activities set by the university. Access to a suitable SCPHN or SPQ Specialist Practice and Prescribing (where applicable) placement/s that can provide the required supervised period of learning/learning opportunities. Protected time to engage in practice development activities with an identified Practice Assessor/s and Practice Supervisor/s who meet the required eligibility criteria to undertake the role. Pathway specific criteria: SCPHN Current NMC registered nurse (level 1) or NMC registered midwife capable of safe and effective practice at the level of proficiency appropriate to the NMC approved specialist community public health nurse (SCPHN) programme. SPQ Current NMC registered nurse (level 1) with relevant professional registration, capable of safe and effective practice at the level of proficiency appropriate to the NMC approved community nursing specialist practice qualification (SPQ). Registration with the NMC for a minimum period of 1 year prior to application. Applications to the programme will be welcomed from applicants who are sponsored by either the NHS, private and/or third sector Health and Social Care organisations.
