Course summary
The MFA Communication at the RCA addresses the complexities, pluralities and challenges of contemporary communication through a practice led, interdisciplinary approach that explores communication as a radical and experimental creative practice. You will engage in critical and creative experimentation within a studio based culture of making, collaborating with a global cohort drawn from diverse creative, cultural and philosophical backgrounds. By combining theory and practice with a strong ethos of professional collaboration with external partners such as Save the Children, Friends of the Earth and Foster + Partners, the programme enables you to transform and redefine your professional communication practice, culminating in an independent research project that pushes the boundaries of what communication can be. Modules
Term 1 In Term 1, you take Communication and Interdisciplinarity, which introduces you to different methods and approaches to working in a multidisciplinary communication community. You also take Cultures and Contexts, where you reflect on how your existing skills and discipline can apply in new contexts, and explore the professional and cultural opportunities of your work. In addition, you choose two electives from across the RCA Schools. Term 2 In Term 2, you take Methods & Methodologies, in which you test and develop emerging practices and articulate them into clear methods. You also take Consolidating Your Practice, where you plan and prepare your final research project through preproduction, forming a practical and tested proposal. Term 3 In Term 3, you take your Independent Research Project. In this unit, you design and realise a body of work (individual or collaborative), supported by a tutor, and consider how you will present or disseminate your work professionally (e.g., event, publication).
Entry requirements
We welcome applications from individuals from all backgrounds and from all over the world. RCA alumni come from a wide range of backgrounds and industries, bringing diverse experiences including those unrelated to art, which enrich the creative community and drive fresh perspectives. As part of your application, you may need to submit: A portfolio showcasing your work and artistic vision. A personal statement (around 300 words) describing your interests, motivations, and future goals. An introduction video (maximum 2 minutes) to introduce yourself and explain your artistic approach and project ideas.
