Course summary
The BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies (Top-Up) is a one-year full time higher education qualification for experienced early years practitioners who have successfully completed a Foundation Degree in Early Years Practice or equivalent L5 qualification who want to progress into further responsibility within the early years sector or postgraduate study to switch careers. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of the principles and values that underpin early years in order to develop their professional practice. The programme aims to encourage students to reflect and critically analyse a range of perspectives in relation to contemporary issues in the early years. Within the programme, there will be opportunity for students to attain a level of professional practice. The level 6 top-up degree in Early Childhood Studies is an employment-related educational qualification which will provide students with the specialist knowledge and skills required within the Early Years sector. All modules link theory to practice. Students who are not employed in the early years sector will be required to complete 70 hours in a chosen early years setting as part of the Professional Practice module. This course is subject to re-validation by The Open University.
Modules
Modules are currently under review but are likely to include: • Contemporary Issues • International Perspectives • Professional Practice • Play in the Early Years • Research dissertation based on a particular area of professional practice within early years.
Assessment method
The programme aims to provide key knowledge and develop transferable skills and assessment tasks are developed to put this knowledge into practice and research issues further. The methods listed will be employed both for learning and assessing of the learning achieved. Students will receive timely, relevant and constructive feedback to enable skills to continue to develop. The variety of assessments include: Research Dissertation, Portfolios, Essays, Presentations, Debates, Reports and Reflective Accounts.

Entry requirements
Qualification requirements
To apply for this programme, applicants will be required to hold a Level 5 qualification with 240 credits achieved from a Foundation Degree or a similar undergraduate Level 5 programme. Applicants will also be required to possess relevant experience within the Early Years sector. It is expected that all applicants will hold relevant Level 2 maths and English qualifications equivalent to GCSE grade C/4 or above. Mature students: The University Centre welcomes applications from mature students who have relevant experience in lieu of the minimum entry requirements. Mature students (over 21) without formal qualifications may be accepted subject to satisfactory literacy and numeracy tests, work experience (if applicable) and a strong personal statement. Recognition of Prior Learning: Applicants may meet entry requirements through the process of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which awards academic credits through recognition of prior learning via work and other life experiences. Recognition of Prior Learning is either certificated (RPCL) through formal assessment, or Experiential (RPEL) via skills and knowledge developed through work and voluntary activities.
