Course summary

This ESRC-recognised research training programme will provide you with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the concepts, tools and methods of modern economics and their application to the analysis of economic problems. We will give you the training necessary for a career as an economist in the public or private sector or to undertake independent research. We’re ranked Top 15 in the UK for Economics and Econometrics (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023). Southampton also has one of the largest and most active econometric theory groups in the UK and a long-standing reputation in macroeconomics and microeconomic theory.

Assessment method

Some modules are assessed exams, coursework, projects, or essays. Exams are held at the end of each semester.


How to apply

International applicants

English language Band C: For IELTS 6.5 overall, with minimum 6.0 in all components. For information on other accepted English language tests, please see the website.

Entry requirements

You'll need a 2.1 bachelor's degree in economics or a related subject with a high Maths content such as maths, engineering, data science, computer science or physics. Please note Finance or Management degrees are not suitable for this programme.
