Course summary
Biomedical Science applies the concepts of biochemistry and cell biology to the study of health and disease in the human body. Based in the School of Biological Sciences, you’ll learn about the onset, progression, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and you will be taught by research-active academic experts and practising Biomedical Scientists from our local hospitals. This broadly based degree is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS) and prepares you to follow a professional NHS career or research. In addition, if you choose to undertake an NHS laboratory placement year (which we arrange for you in one of the hospitals in our consortium) you may register as an independent Biomedical Scientist. Your education extends beyond the university campus. We support you in expanding your education through offering the opportunity to spend a year studying abroad at one of our partner universities. This four-year version of our degree allows you spend the third year abroad, or employed on a placement abroad, whilst otherwise remaining identical to the three-year course. Studying abroad allows you to experience other cultures and languages, to broaden your degree socially and academically, and to demonstrate to employers that you are mature, adaptable and organised. Located in the School of Biological Sciences, we are one of the largest schools at the University. Two-thirds of our research is rated "world-leading" or "internationally excellent" (REF 2014).
