Course summary

Where better to lay the foundations for the future, than the first English University to offer an Engineering Degree? By specialising in Civil and Structural Engineering at The University of Manchester, with the invaluable addition of a year spent in industry, you ready yourself for both a varied and rewarding career. Not only are our graduates the most sought-after by the Top 100 UK Employers (THE Graduate Market, 2022 and 2023), but as you emerge with a Master's of Engineering (MEng), you will feel ready to take on everything our everchanging world has to offer. You will find the first two years of your study are broad, spanning everything from structural analysis, hydraulics, geotechnics, and mathematics, to construction materials, engineering design, and project management. As you develop, the level of flexibility you possess to steer your interests with optional subjects will grow – popular choices including renewable energy systems, fire engineering, earthquake engineering and computational hydraulics. It’s after your second or third year that you will embark on a year working in the civil engineering profession – a structured industrial placement assessed and monitored by the department, with support in finding your placement provided. By year three, you will undertake an individual research project on an emerging topic in the field. By year four, will undertake an industry-supervised group design project, and crucial units on advanced structural analysis and design. Engineering at Manchester is loved not only for our standard of teaching and research, but for the people. As a student in our department, you will also benefit from our welcoming community, where you can meet likeminded friends in subject-based societies, like Civil Engineering Soc, Women in Science and Engineering, and The Sustainable Engineering Initiative. This degree will equip you to enter the civil engineering professions and fully satisfies the educational base for becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
