Course summary

This master’s course will help you develop personally and professionally as an educator. You’ll be exposed to the latest educational theory and policy. This master’s programme will inform your educational practice. As part of this course, you’ll:

  • Take a critical and reflective approach to diverse issues in education, such as culture, race, gender and class
  • Understand and challenge the importance of relevant theories, paradigms and concepts
  • Develop and articulate your own views on education, informed by a critical evaluation of relevant theoretical and practical perspectives
  • Adopt an autonomous approach to your learning and continuing professional development
  • Apply theoretical debates to critically evaluate professional practices and vocational contexts
  • Explore and critique educational theory, research, policy and practice
  • Select and apply appropriate research techniques and methodologies to complete a major piece of independent research
  • Practise making sound judgments and communicating or presenting your conclusions competently

Teaching and learning This course is delivered during weekend and twilight sessions, using small group tutorials, seminars and lectures. You’ll have opportunities to participate in peer-led discussions and presentations and access to additional support on our Virtual Learning Environment. Your learning will be enhanced by visiting speakers who will share their experiences of working in the educational sector. Entry requirements

Applicants should either have at least a 2nd Class Honours degree, a professional or vocational qualification in education equivalent to level 6 study, or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum 5.5 in each component) or equivalent.
