Media culture is changing at a rapid pace. New technologies, platforms and organisations emerge while others are threatened with extinction. What are the implications? What specialist skills do you need to develop? At the heart of digital innovation On our programme, you’ll look at the culture, society and theories that bring new ideas to the media industry. You’ll explore issues around digital technology and identity, develop high-level skills in critical analysis and get hands-on experience in areas like digital journalism and visual storytelling. Some modules include practical assessment such as creating a video or documentary, where you’ll consider the theory behind what you produce. It’s this combination of knowledge and skills that employers find so valuable – and that puts you in a prime position to work in this exciting and rapidly changing industry. To help you make the most out of the course, you’ll also be given a personal academic tutor to discuss your progress on a one-to-one basis.

Modules

Core modules: Critical methods in media and cultural studies; critical debates in media and cultural studies; dissertation. Optional modules may include: Women's studies research project; feminist media and cultural studies; debates in gender research; gender, sex and bodies; gender and violence; capitalism and crisis; environment and culture; the social life of science and technology: theories and debates; social and cultural theory; cybercultures; research projects in practice: from design to dissemination; contemporary debates in sociology; methods in science and technology studies; mobilities, society and change.

Assessment method

Assessment is via coursework and a dissertation.


Entry requirements

2:1 Hons degree (UK or equivalent) in a relevant social science. We may also consider non-standard applicants, please contact us for information. We may ask you to provide a recognised English language qualification, dependent upon your nationality and where you have studied previously. We normally require an IELTS (Academic) Test with an overall score of at least 7.0, and a minimum of 6.0 in each element of the test. We also consider other English language qualifications.
