Course summary

Civil engineers are vital to the design of our built environment. From bridges, tunnels and transport systems, to buildings, flood defences and water management, their performance is fundamental to modern society. This degree gives you a strong grounding in the design and analysis of Civil Engineering structures. You will develop complex problem-solving skills, gain the ability to sketch and model engineering solutions and become comfortable preparing technical reports. As you progress, your developing analytical abilities will combine with hands-on experience of state-of-the-art equipment, establishing skills which are vital to securing employment in the civil engineering industry. The fourth year of this 5-year course with a Year in Industry will be spent on placement. You will have the opportunity to gain real-world industry experience and develop your employability skill set. We have a strong network of industry contacts, and you will receive dedicated support from our employability team, ranging from CV advice through to mock interviews.

Modules

In Year 1, you will typically study areas including: Introduction to Civil Engineering Materials, Engineering for People Hackathon, Introduction to Transportation Engineering. In Year 2, you will typically study areas including: Geomechanics, AI, Machine Learning and Data Analysis, Civil Engineering Design Methods, Civil Engineering Management. In Year 3, you will typically study areas including: Finite Elements for Civil Engineers, Civil Engineering Design Practice & Management, Hydrology and Unsteady Flow. In Year 4, you will typically undertake an Industrial Placement Year. In Year 5, you will typically study areas including: Dynamics and Earthquake Analysis of Structures, Advanced Structural Design, Transportation Engineering.

Qualification requirements

Students with industrial experience and qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you have studied access or vocational qualifications, you are advised to apply for the Integrated Foundation Year. If you are applying for Level Two (second year) entry, in order to be considered, you will need to have already covered the topics offered in Swansea at Level One (first year) in a certified qualification, with a high overall score.


English language requirements

For applicants whose first language is not English we require a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent) and no less than 5.5 in each component.
