Course summary

Our Primary Education BA (Hons) with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) course combines flexible online learning with in-school initial teacher training, offering access across to university-led education grounded in classroom experience. This tuition-fee funded degree supports you to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) while on placements in primary schools in England, learning alongside experienced school-based mentors.

  • Train to teach 'on the job', learning with the support of expert practitioners in schools.
  • Study academic learning online, guided by university-led support.
This course offers a flexible, practice-based alternative to traditional university-based teacher training, ideal if you want to learn while making a real impact in the classroom. It is designed to help you build a strong foundation in key teaching areas, such as pedagogy, behaviour management, assessment, subject and curriculum knowledge, professional skills and inclusive education, including special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). You’ll have the opportunity to develop the expertise, practical skills and confidence needed to become an effective and inspiring primary school teacher. Alongside your practical modules, you will complete four 30-credit learning modules per year. Modules

Year 1 Alongside your Introductory Placement practical module, you will complete four 30-credit learning modules per year:

  • An introduction to professional behaviours
  • An introduction to SEND and behaviour
  • An introduction to subject knowledge: core subjects
  • An introduction to teaching and learning
Year 2 Alongside your Developing Placement practical module, you will complete four 30-credit learning modules per year:
  • Developing your subject knowledge
  • Becoming a research informed practitioner
  • Developing your understanding of teaching and learning
  • Developing your understanding SEND and behaviour
Final Year Alongside your Extending Placement practical module, you will complete four 30-credit learning modules per year:
  • Debates in education
  • Enhancing your understanding of teaching and learning
  • Becoming a teacher
  • Enhancing your understanding of SEND and behaviour
We regularly review our course content, to make it relevant and current for the benefit of our students. For these reasons, course modules may be updated.

Assessment method

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods may include:

  • written assignments
  • presentations
  • oral presentations
  • observations.
The practical modules will be assessed on the evidence you collect, collate and upload to an electronic portfolio. You will be visited by a Visiting Assessor (VA) at least four times during the course. They will observe you teaching and meet with you and your school-based mentor to discuss and oversee the assessment of your overall progress. At the end of the course, a final assessment is made on whether you meet the Teachers’ Standards. The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards achieving the intended learning outcomes.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

Qualification requirements

In addition, you must have a school willing to support you as your main placement school for the duration of the course. Students will be subject to satisfactory health clearance and enhanced criminal record disclosure. English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you will need to hold an academic IELTS less than three years old, with a score of at least 7 overall with no component less than 6.5, or TOEFL 600. If your qualifications were gained outside the UK, an official comparability statement for non-UK qualifications assessed by UK ENIC must be provided.
