Course summary
Civil Engineers play a vital role in the planning, design and construction of the infrastructure, which is fundamental to the economic wellbeing of a region or country. Civil Engineers, therefore, have very wide career opportunities and are employed for their scientific knowledge, design expertise, problem-solving skills and business awareness. This course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (ICE, IStructE, CIHT, IHE).* This is a full time Foundation Degree (FdEng) programme offered by Belfast Met in collaboration with Ulster University. The course is designed for people who wish to progress to study a degree in civil engineering or are interested in a career in the construction/civil engineering industry and require a Foundation Degree to enhance employment prospects. Assessment method
Assessment is by a combination of assignments and examinations. The assignments are often based on case studies or practical exercises and are designed to encourage students to explore the wider application of core engineering principles. This programme of study is likely to include enrichment units which are an additional component to enhance employability. Students will undertake a period of relevant industrial work placement, minimum duration 400 hours, which will assist in developing a sound understanding of the practical applications of some of the theoretical content. This forms a significant portion of the assessment and will be completed in the second semester of year two. Note students must source and secure a suitable placement location/provider.

Applicants must satisfy the Ulster University General Entrance Requirements as specified in the University General Regulations and at least one of the following: 1. A minimum of three passes at GCSE Grade C or 4 and above, which must include Mathematics and English Language (approved equivalents can be found at www.ulster.ac.uk/study/entrance-requirements), and a minimum of 64 UCAS points through a combination of A Levels and/or Level 3 Awards while meeting the subject requirement as follows: a). A minimum grade D in one of the following A Level subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Biology, Geography, Applied Science, Double Award Science, Life and Health Science (single or double award), or Technology (including Technology & Design, Design & Technology, Environmental Technology, Environmental Science, or Digital Technology) OR b). a BTEC National Level 3 award in one of the following subjects: Construction and the Built Environment, Civil Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Aeronautical Engineering, AND include a minimum grade MERIT in TWO of the following BTEC Level 3 units (either within the Level 3 award or as a standalone unit): - Mathematics in Construction and the Built Environment - Further Mathematics in Construction and the Built Environment - Further Mathematics for Construction - Further Mathematics for Engineering Technicians - Further Engineering Mathematics - Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems - Structural Mechanics - Principles and Applications of Structural Mechanics - Mechanical Technology - Mechanical Principles - Principles and Applications of Fluid Mechanics - Public Health Engineering Please note that other Level 3 Qualifications including OCR Nationals and Cambridge Technical Combinations do not satisfy the subject entry requirement for this course and will be accepted as grade only when presented with A levels in the required subject(s). 2. Level 3 Apprenticeship Civil Engineering. 64 UCAS points equivalent with a combination of Pearson BTEC National Diploma in Construction (Civil Engineering), with Merit in Further Mathematics AND Public Health Engineering AND a Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Diploma in Civil Engineering for Technicians (Institution of Civil Engineers) (9 units). Plus a minimum of three passes at GCSE Grade C or 4 and above, which must include Mathematics and English Language (or approved equivalents: see 1 above). 3. Irish Leaving Certificate: a minimum tariff of 64 UCAS points from four subjects at higher level to include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology, Technical Drawing/Graphics, Construction, Engineering or Geography at H3. Must include English and Mathematics at min grade H6 or O4. 4. Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers: a minimum tariff of 64 UCAS points, which must include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Geography, Construction, Technology or Technical drawing/graphics at Grade D or above. Plus GCSE Maths and English at grade C or 4 and above. 5. Access Course: A minimum of 45% average in a relevant discipline of which modules must include Mathematics and Advanced/Further Mathematics. 6. Evidence of an ability to undertake the programme through the accreditation of prior experiential learning which must be submitted in accordance with the College Policy Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) Higher Education Process available on the college website. 7. You must ensure that you meet the following non-academic entry requirements, for courses running during academic year September 2026 – August 2027: You must be 16 years old by 1 July 2026 (born before 2nd July 2010). You must provide proof of your right to study in the UK. For courses with work placement, you must also provide proof of your right to work in the UK. You must provide photographic evidence of your identity. Access NI/ SOSCARE - Admission to certain courses will be subject to satisfactory Access NI/criminal records and SOSCARE checks. English language requirements
There are minimum English Language requirements for full-time Higher Education programmes. Applicants must hold a GCSE pass at Grade C/4 or above in English Language. Level 2 Certificate in Essential Skills Literacy may be regarded as an acceptable alternative to GCSE English Language. The College may accept an equivalent level of qualification. Some courses may require higher than the minimum Grade C/4. You are advised to check the individual course entry requirements. You can find these within the Entry Requirements section under each individual course. Where a GCSE grade in English is specified as the only qualification accepted, other English competency qualifications may not apply. If you have not achieved GCSE English Language Grade C/4 or an equivalent level, you will be asked to provide evidence of English Language competency. Other qualifications may be accepted as evidence of level of competency on a case-by-case basis.
