Course summary

Research areas include: professional practice of pharmacy and education: evaluation and development of medicines management services; review of medicines use review services; evaluating medicine-related problems in primary and secondary care; evaluation of teaching and learning; impact of portfolios in practice; clinical audit; research themes in formulation and drug delivery science: transdermal/dermal drug delivery; topical formulations for the prevention/treatment of parasitic infection; drug delivery via the airway; development of analytical methods and in vitro models; use of predictive models for the optimisation of percutaneous absorption; quantitative structure-permeability relationships (QSPRs); clinical pharmacology and therapeutics: focus on stimulant synthetic drugs; use of the internet for medicines and drug information; drug overdose issues related to the misuse of stimulant drugs; evaluation of drug-related deaths prevention policies and initiatives; clinical pharmacokinetics.

Assessment method

The degree is assessed solely on the basis of the final research output, in the form of a substantial written thesis which must be "defended" in a viva.


Entry requirements

An honours degree (normally at least 2:1 or above) in an appropriate discipline. IELTS entry requirement is normally 6.5, TOEFL 550 (213 CBT) or equivalent for overseas students.
