About this course The MA Digital Media course offers a distinctive, responsive media education by blending critical and creative approaches to digital media and media studies. It uses multi-disciplinary methodologies and draws on disciplines such as media arts, visual culture, algorithmic culture, social media platforms, screen studies, and games. The course focuses on critical media studies combined with practice-led projects. You will: • Develop skills in critical thinking, media theory, and creative methodologies. • Learn how to navigate contemporary global issues in media, including ecology, race, gender, and politics. • Use digital media technologies to create and lead independent projects and conduct research relevant to media, arts, culture, and technology. Key features of this course • Distinctive Blend: Integrates a balance of theory (Digital Media I: Critical Theory) and creative practice (Critical Media Practice and Digital Media II: Collaborative Critical Practice). • Final Project Flexibility: The degree culminates in a Final Project which can be either a traditional written research project or an integrated theory and practice project (e.g., a practical media output with written commentary). • Industry and Research Exposure: Benefit from collaboration with University research groups, guest talks from industry professionals, and participation in exhibitions and research events. • Location: The course is taught at Winchester School of Art. Further information This is a one-year, full-time master's course. Taught modules are delivered in Semesters 1 and 2, followed by the independent Final Project during the summer (Semester 3). Assessment method

You'll complete practical and theoretical work throughout the course. In your final project, you will be able to present your work as either:

  • theory: 10,000 words:
  • integrated theory and practice: 7,000 words, and 3,000 words' equivalent of practice-based research
If you choose to do a theory project, you will take part in, organise and showcase your work in a digital publication. If you choose an integrated theory and practice project, you’ll take part in our final degree show alongside other practical courses. When applying, you'll be asked to choose your preferred project format as part of your portfolio checklist. This helps us plan the programme ahead. This is just an option for how you’d like your project to be assessed, and not a fixed pathway.


How to apply

International applicants

If English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate your English ability by meeting our Band C requirements: IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all components. For information on other accepted English language tests, please see our website.

Entry requirements

You'll need a 2:2 degree in a subject relevant to digital media, such as art (theoretical or digital), humanities, creative computing, communication, psychology, sociology, arts (including perfoming), broadcasting.
