OVERVIEW UWS’s BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching will help you develop the skills and expertise required to become a professional sports coach. This degree has been developed in partnership with sports governing bodies, sporting organisations and coaching professionals to ensure that you develop knowledge and hands-on practical experience relevant to the modern sports, health and fitness industries. PRACTICAL FOCUS Excellent industry connections provide work-based learning opportunities and offer links to attain coaching qualifications. There is a strong emphasis on placement learning and developing the practical coaching skills in this degree. We have excellent links with a number of clubs and organisations, including St Mirren Football Club, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Trust and the Scottish Football Association, which provide work-based learning opportunities and offer you the opportunity to pick up professional coaching qualifications. We also encourage you to identify organisations that you are interested in working with. CAREER PROSPECTS This degree will prepare you for a career in Sport Coaching. Graduates of the programme have gone on to become active schools co-ordinators, professional coaches, performance analysts, sport psychologists, sport business owners, researchers and teachers. You would be expected to be able assist/lead: // Planning, managing and delivering sport coaching at local, regional, national and international events and competitions // Sport coaching programme delivery for specific client groups such as at-risk youths or individuals with additional support needs // Delivering specific areas of sport science e.g. strength and conditioning and performance analysis Jobs Typical roles include: PE Teachers (additional study required), Outdoor Education Instructors, Active Schools Co-ordinators, Sport Development Officers Further Studies Many of our graduates have successfully progressed to postgraduate study such as taught Masters (MSc) courses or research degrees (MRes, MPhil, PhD) in sport coaching. Some of our graduates have even progressed to undertake a one-year teaching qualification (PGDE/QTS) in PE.
Modules
In your first year you will be introduced to the fundamental principles of sport coaching, sport and exercise, and physical activity, health and fitness. As you progress throughout the programme you will develop your understanding of specific areas of sport coaching (e.g. performance analysis, sports conditioning and biomechanics) and you will receive training from industry partners ahead of placement modules in years two and three. Each year of the programme contains modules which are practical in nature. Here, students will acquire practical knowledge and understanding through a variety of real-world learning activities and assessments that simulate workplace practices and procedures. In your final year, you will consolidate the theory you have gained with further practical coaching modules and a capstone dissertation module which allows students to holistically demonstrate the learning they have gained throughout the degree. Optional modules will be available in the latter stages of the degree, including social issues, psychology, the female athlete, and strength and conditioning. Assessment method
Our BSc Sport Coaching degree makes use of a range of teaching and learning methods including tutorials and seminars, practical workshops and exercises in a simulated work environment, small group teaching and group project work. Independent, online and peer-to-peer learning is an important element of this course. We use a variety of assessment methods on the degree itself. TUITION FEE INFORMATION - SCOTTISH STUDENTS:
Eligible Scottish domiciled students can usually apply to have their tuition fees paid for them each year of their studies by the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS). If you're not sure about your eligibility, you should contact SAAS. You need to apply to SAAS each year of study to have your tuition fees paid directly to UWS.
TUITION FEE INFORMATION - UK, IRISH & GIBRALTARIAN STUDENTS:
Eligible students who are domiciled in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland as well as from the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, Gibraltar or the Republic of Ireland will qualify for tuition fees of £9,250 per academic session of study to a maximum of three years if you are studying on a four year bachelor degree course (eg. BAcc (Hons) / BA (Hons) / BEng (Hons) / BSc (Hons)). So, if your degree is four years' duration, you will only be charged tuition fees for three years. Similarly, if you are studying a five year integrated master's degree course (eg. MEng (Hons)) the you will only be charged tuition fees for four years.
