Course summary

This program is aimed to develop your understanding of biology and chemistry fundamentals such as how the human body functions in health and disease, an appreciation of healthcare systems and technologies, organic and inorganic chemistry, theoretical and practical application of analytical chemistry, and study how matter behaves at the atomic and molecular scale in physical chemistry. You will then learn about the immune system and develop microbiological techniques and discover the principles of biomedical science. This will ensure that you are well prepared to make a difference in the scientific industry. Students will develop skills for employability including good laboratory practice, good manufacturing practice, control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH) assessments, health and safety policies including compliance to ISO9001 standard, Human Tissues Act, standardisation & calibration, and quality assurance. This will allow you to progress into employment in a wide range of employers (e.g. chemical, biotechnology, pharmaceutical). As part of our work ready guarantee completion of this course you will meet the criteria that will enable you to work towards Registered Scientist status. Key staff ensure they keep their industry experience up to date with industry visits and placements. This course is heavily enriched by local industry including activities like trips and visits to different sized laboratories and guest speakers from local companies (e.g. Proctor & Gamble, CPI.). These activities change on a yearly basis and provide a great insight into how you can make yourself work ready. You will learn key practical skills and you will also develop transferrable skills including verbal and poster presentations, written reports, independent research and teamworking skills. This course is ideal for those that are wishing to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to work in sectors such as healthcare science, scientific research, pharmaceutical manufacturing or in academia. It is for those that have recently completed school or college, as well as for those wishing to study to further their career in the science industry. Students who successfully complete the Level 4 CertHE can then progress onto to the second final year of the FdSc Applied Science. Or, students who successfully complete the Level 4 CertHE can progress on to a variety of roles within the science sector such as laboratory technician, healthcare scientist associate, medical laboratory assistant.

Modules

Cell and Human Biology, Laboratory Skills and Operations, Industrial Chemistry, Scientific Data Handling and Quality Analysis, Personal Development, Academic Study Skills, Work Related Learning.

Assessment method

You will learn in a variety of ways including via practical laboratory sessions, e-learning, independent study, and work-based projects. Learning takes place in classrooms, lecture theatres and laboratories. You will develop your practical skills with hands-on experience of a range of scientific techniques and instrumentation. You will also participate in lectures, group work and self-directed study. There will also be opportunities to present work to your peers and a wider audience through presentations and poster sessions, allowing you to develop your skills in public speaking.
