Music Production with Foundation Year

Course summary

This course follows the same specifications as our three-year BA (Hons) Music Production degree, but the extra Foundation Year will allow you to gain the essential musical and theoretical skills you'll need to study music production at university level. Our BA (Hons) Music Production degree puts you at the heart of the studio, giving you the creative freedom and technical expertise to shape the music you want to make. Whether you’re an aspiring music producer, mix engineer, songwriter or sound designer, this course will equip you with the skills to produce music at a professional level. You’ll develop expertise in studio recording, mixing, mastering, and post-production and refine your production techniques, workflows and arrangement skills using industry-standard tools and Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). You’ll work in small group sessions and practical workshops, gaining the confidence in MIDI programming, audio editing, and sound manipulation and arrangements to run your own sessions and collaborate on creative projects. As you progress through the course, you’ll deepen your critical listening skills, explore the history and context of music production, and take part in collaborative and interdisciplinary projects with other creatives. In your final year, you’ll deliver a final portfolio project – this could be an album, soundtrack, or commercial release – aligned with your career goals. Taught by experienced producers and industry professionals, the course balances technical mastery with creative exploration, preparing you for a wide range of careers across production, recording, mixing, media, performance, and beyond. The Foundation Year allows you to build essential skills for aspiring music producers and performers, combining music theory, digital production, and cultural context. You'll explore the evolution of popular music and how social, cultural, and technological shifts have shaped key genres and artists. Core modules focus on foundational and advanced techniques in DAWs, DJing, and studio work, using industry-standard tools and software. You'll also develop compositional and aural skills, building a digital portfolio while gaining fluency in music theory. Each module is designed to support your creative development and prepare you for further study in music production or performance. On completion of the Foundation Year you will continue to Year 1 of the BA (Hons) Music Production degree.
