​The Master of Research (MRes) programme provides high quality and professionally relevant training in research methods and analysis for health, psychology and biomedical science graduates. Through the taught modules students will develop their research skills, including critically appraising literature, developing research proposals, laboratory techniques, project management, presenting findings (through oral, written and digital media) and applying for funding. Students will be introduced to a wide range of methodologies and practical techniques relevant to their discipline. Training will be provided in research governance and ethical procedures to ensure students are prepared for work as professional researchers. Students will conduct two substantial research studies in a topic of their choice, supervised by experienced members of academic staff. These studies will be written up in the form of journal articles and will form a substantial component of the credits for the MRes award. This award prepares you for a future in research and progression on to PhD studies. Possible exit points - MRes / PGCert

Modules

Students will complete the following modules - according to their chosen pathway- over the course of one full year (full-time) or two years (part-time). The modules are intended to prepare you for subject-specific study while also developing your skills as a researcher. All pathways include the modules Dissertation (MRes), which is 120 credits, and Developing Skills for a Career in Research, which is 20 credits. Dissertation: The dissertation (120 credits of the 180 credits for the whole Programmes) will involve all the elements of the research process from the design of the study, data collection, analysis of findings and write up in the format of a journal article. Students will be supervised by two members of staff to complete their dissertation. Students will be matched with appropriate staff members who have expertise in the chosen topic and/or methodology. Each pathway then has the following other 20 credit modules to make them up to 180 credits. Assessment method

Each module has its own form of assessment. The majority of modules are assessed via coursework, including research reviews, reports, essays and presentations. The dissertation will be written up in the format of two journal articles or a thesis, in agreement with your supervisors.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

Entry requirements

A good honours degree (normally 2.1 or above) in a health or social science subject is normally required. However, applicants with relevant professional experience or qualifications are welcomed and will be considered individually. International Applicants: Students whose first language is not English will need to provide evidence of fluency to at least an IELTS 6.5 standard or equivalent.
