Course summary

Are you fascinated by all periods of history? Explore political, cultural and social changes from ancient Greece and Rome to the present day on this joint honours Ancient History and History degree. You will study topics such as politics, empire, gender, slavery, warfare, religion, art and science. This degree helps you draw connections across the ancient, medieval, early modern and modern periods, deepening your understanding of the development of societies over time. As a joint honours student, you’ll develop key professional and transferable skills through both subjects. As an Ancient History and History student, you will:

  • develop skills in historical enquiry and critical analysis
  • engage with a wide range of primary source material, including texts and artefacts
  • explore how ancient and historical societies connect and shape our understanding of contemporary issues
Your module combinations extend beyond Europe, covering regions such as North Africa, Asia and the Americas. Why choose this course? 1. Curation: specialise in an area of interest through a year-long 'Special Subject' and dissertation 7. Through the Schools Volunteering Project you get the opportunity to volunteer annually, delivering history lessons and after-school clubs in Nottingham’s primary and secondary schools, especially useful if you are considering a career in teaching 8. Work with our dedicated Faculty of Arts Placements Team to assist with your employability skills development via a range of placements, internships and volunteering opportunities 9. Explore real-world challenges across interdisciplinary themes with our ‘Engaged Arts’ optional modules You can also access this course through a Foundation Year. This may be suitable if you have faced educational barriers and do not expect to meet the entry requirements for direct entry to a degree course. Engaged Arts All students within the Faculty of Arts can select ‘Engaged Arts’ modules where you’ll approach real-world challenges across contemporary themes such as sustainability or equity and justice.
