Course summary
Digital technology is a fast paced and exciting discipline that thrives on innovation. From medicine and healthcare to industrial applications, transport, communications, and entertainment, our lives are dependent on digital technology, one of the fastest growing areas for employment in the world. If you hold a higher national diploma or foundation degree in a digital technology or computing award this course provides a progression route to a degree in Digital Technologies. You can study full time or part-time, at Reading College and University Centre or City of Oxford College and University Centre or via distance learning. You will benefit from visiting speakers from industry and the setting of ‘live briefs’ from companies such as Microsoft, IBM and JISC. Using high quality learning resources such as computer laboratories and digital resources you can apply the cutting-edge theoretical skills and techniques you have learned. You will acquire knowledge and skills, emphasising the personal, interpersonal and project skills necessary to apply these to the modern workplace.
Modules
On this top-up year, you’ll deepen your knowledge of digital technologies while developing the practical and professional skills that employers are looking for. You’ll study topics such as software engineering, project management, cloud computing and the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and data analytics. Much of your learning will be hands-on – you’ll work on live briefs from organisations like Microsoft, IBM and JISC, apply theory in specialist labs or cloud environments, and put your skills into practice through a substantial Digital Technologies project. Whether you study on campus or online, you’ll learn in small groups and interactive sessions, with plenty of opportunities for discussion, problem-solving, and collaboration. Guest speakers from industry will also give you real insight into current trends and emerging technologies.
Assessment method
Your assessments will be diverse, and will support different learning styles - you’ll have a real opportunity to showcase your strengths. Your learning may be assessed by a combination of individual or group coursework, examinations, and presentations.
