Course summary

In the first year, you will study subjects across the breadth of biology related to human health and disease. This will provide a sound, broad background in biochemistry, cell and cancer biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, neuroscience, pharmacology, physiology and virology. First-year units may include Normal and Tumour Cells, Pharmacology 1A, Biochemistry: Cellular Composition, Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Fundamentals of Body Function, and Biochemistry: Cellular Composition. As a second-year student, you will study molecular genetics and a range of biomedical sciences units, allowing you to pursue your interests as they develop. You will also receive training in transferable and employability skills. There is a strong emphasis on the development of practical skills and our bespoke online resources are available in eBiolabs to help you prepare for practical laboratory sessions in the first and second years. You will also develop research skills to prepare you for a project in the third year. In the final year, you will choose options from a list of units that reflect our research strengths and undertake a project in a related discipline.

Qualification requirements

European Baccalaureate: 85% overall, with 8.5 in Chemistry and another core science/mathematics subject. Core science/mathematics subjects include: Biology, Further Mathematics, Human Biology, Mathematics and Physics.
