Mastery of Italian and Portuguese opens doors to international business, diplomacy, tourism, education and the cultural sector. On this course, you'll gain deep linguistic and cultural insights into two internationally influential regions as you enhance your global communication skills. This unique combination equips you with the cultural fluency, critical thinking, and adaptability needed to unlock a wide range of international, educational or academic careers. During your Year Abroad you will study, work or teach at one of our partner institutions, sharpening your language skills and building unvaluable cultural and professional connections. Delve further into your language studies by choosing from a selection of exciting optional modules, which may include:
- Visions of Italy: Modern Italy in the Making
- Dante: Word, Music and Image
- Icons of Italy
- Memory and Public Space in the Portuguese-speaking World
- Roots of Inequality: Race, Gender and the Legacies of Colonialism
- Experience a new approach to language learning with our CLIL (Content Language Integrated Learning) teaching method - study topics of cultural significance in Italian and Portuguese, designed and delivered by expert researchers.
- Teach, study or complete a work placement abroad - immerse yourself in the Italian and Portuguese languages.
- Enjoy focused academic contact - we pride ourselves on competitive contact hours. These take place in small groups, encouraging active language learning through engagement with cultural material.

Modules
First-year modules cover a broad base of the subject and are designed to introduce you to ways of studying at university. By the final year the modules you take will become more specialised and reflect the research expertise of the academic staff.
