Course summary

During this three-year course, you’ll apply physics to the detection and treatment of medical conditions to improve people’s health and wellbeing in this exciting and fast-growing field. Using physics to diagnose and treat medical conditions is a rapidly expanding and exciting field of study, vitally important to supporting people’s health. This IOP accredited course is unique in its focus on practice rather than theory. Developed with the University Hospital of Wales (UHW), our medical physics modules are delivered by NHS professionals at UHW and Velindre Cancer Centre. As well as a broad introduction to the many specialist areas of medical physics, you’ll also gain a solid foundation in core physics. In the final year, you’ll carry out a 30-credit Medical Physics research project at UHW, Velindre Cancer Centre or the flagship Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC) in an exciting area such as Doppler ultrasound, nuclear medicine, radiotherapy, diagnostic radiology physics or physiological measurement. Learn directly from NHS professionals Our medical physics modules are delivered by NHS professionals at the University Hospital of Wales and Velindre Cancer Centre. Apply for the NHS STP (Scientist Training Programme) You can apply for the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) after graduating, which is also delivered by your BSc lecturers. Specialised modules You’ll study medical physics modules in areas including biophysics, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy.

Qualification requirements

We do not accept Critical Thinking, General Studies, Citizenship Studies, or other similar equivalent subjects. We will accept a combination of BTEC subjects, A-levels, and other qualifications, subject to the course specific grade and subject requirements.


English language requirements

All applicants are expected to have demonstrable English language skills. Most courses ask for GCSE English grade C/4 or equivalent, but some courses ask for GCSE English grade B/6 or equivalent.

Students from the UK and Islands: Fees stated are for the 2026/27 academic year. The University reserves the right to increase tuition fees in the second and subsequent years of a course as permitted by law or Welsh Government policy. Fees for entry in subsequent years are subject to increase and will be confirmed by the end of October in the year preceding your start date of your programme, or as soon as possible thereafter.
