Course summary

This MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology provides students the opportunity to implement evidence-based practice in the support of people living with long-term health conditions. Clinical exercise physiologists specialise in health and fitness screening and assessment, exercise prescription and delivery, and the implementation of behaviour change strategies for the prevention, treatment and management of health conditions. You will learn how to screen and assess individuals across a spectrum of health and disease, and how to use clinical and scientific reasoning to optimise the delivery of safe and effective exercise-based interventions.

Modules

Year 1 This MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology provides comprehensive training in applying exercise as therapy. On UEL's Physiology programme, you'll develop technical assessment skills and learn about evidence-based exercise prescriptions. You'll gain an advanced understanding of disease pathophysiology concerning exercise. You’ll learn integrated approaches - you'll combine behavioural science with physiological interventions. You'll gain practical experience through clinical placements, so you are ready for your career. In summary, our Physiology course prepares graduates to work effectively as clinical exercise physiologists in healthcare. Technical Skills for Clinical Exercise Physiology (Core Modules) This module develops the technical skills required to become a competent and effective clinical exercise physiologist. A blend of applied theory and practical workshops will equip you with the knowledge and skills of relevant screening techniques and risk stratification processes, as well as the ability to measure and assess health status and functional capacity for patients. Exercise Prescription in Clinical Populations (Core Modules) You will gain the knowledge and skills to design, implement and deliver evidence-based exercise interventions for patients with non-communicable diseases. You will also gain experience of selecting, administering and interpreting appropriate exercise tests to inform data driven exercise prescription. Advanced Clinical Exercise Physiology (Core Modules) This module will further develop knowledge on the pathophysiological processes of non-communicable diseases and their responses to both acute and chronic exercise. You will also develop knowledge of how advancements in assessment tools and research illuminate understanding of exercise physiology. Pathophysiology and Behaviour Change (Core Modules) The module will develop your knowledge of the interdisciplinary nature of working as a clinical exercise physiologist and its impact on health. You will learn how behavioural, psychosocial, and biomedical science techniques can be integrated to enhance patient outcomes relevant to non-communicable diseases. Clinical Placement (Core Modules) This module provides you with the experience and knowledge required to work as an effective clinical exercise physiologist. Underpinned by the latest research-led and evidence-based practice, you will gain experience of applying their theoretical knowledge and practical skills to a range of applied clinical settings.

Assessment method

Assessment tasks are mainly spread across the year to make the workload manageable. Assessment methods include group work, exams and individual work including essays, presentations, case studies, professional development and practical activities depending on the nature of the course. All grades count towards your module mark. More details will be included in the student handbook and module guides. Feedback is provided within 15 working days in line with UEL's assessment and feedback policy. YEAR 1 Practical Assessment Documents 17% Exams 8% Portfolio 33% Coursework 25% Presentation 17%
