Course summary

Expand your mathematical skills and knowledge, and develop master’s-level expertise, with our four-year MMath Mathematics degree, which is approved by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications to meet the educational requirements of Chartered Mathematician status. The University of Reading is in the top 125 in the world for Physical Sciences (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024, by Subject). You’ll follow the same curriculum as our BSc Mathematics course for the first three years of study, before undertaking a piece of advanced project work in your fourth year. In your final year, you’ll acquire master’s-level knowledge of applied and pure mathematics. You'll gain specialist skills for a career as a research mathematician, whether in industry, academia or elsewhere. 98% of our research is world leading or internationally excellent, and 100% of our research impact has been classed 'outstanding’ or ‘very considerable (REF 2021, combining 4* and 3* submissions – Mathematical Sciences). This degree includes an integrated, year-long work placement between your second and third year. We offer a variety of placements – in areas such as finance, statistics or modelling – to provide you with valuable experience and insight into industry. Modules

The following modules have been approved in principle for delivery in 2025/26. Please note that as part of our current curriculum improvement process, all modules require final University approval and may be subject to change. Core modules: Real Analysis I; Calculus; Foundations of Mathematics; Linear of Algebra; Mathematical Communication; Probability and Statistics; Differential Equations; Algebra; Mathematical Modelling and Professional Skills; Portfolio of Projects; Placement Year The University cannot guarantee that all optional modules will be available to all students who may wish to take them. Further information about the content of final approved modules will be available in the summer of 2024.
