Supervision in Counselling, Psychotherapy and Helping Relationships (Taught)

Course summary

This distance learning course provides in-depth training in clinical supervision, focusing on developing the skills necessary to apply supervision techniques in complex professional contexts. It aims to enhance your critical understanding of the theoretical foundations of supervision and improve your ability to critically appraise related research and clinical evidence. Please note that this course is only available to fully qualified professionals who are members of a recognised professional body and have been in practice for at least one year. Throughout the course, you will:

  • Enhance your employment and earning prospects as a supervisor within various helping professions.
  • Contribute to the efficiency of your professional field.
  • Benefit from the latest insights from experts in supervision theory, practice, and research.

Modules

The course includes a 60-credit module titled 'Supervision in Counselling, Psychotherapy, and Helping Relationships', which spans two semesters of ten weeks each. This double module offers a unique opportunity to advance both personal and professional development, culminating in a supervision qualification. Drawing on Hawkin and Shohet’s seven-eyed supervision model, the module is designed for counsellors and psychotherapists with at least one year of post-qualification supervised practice experience, as well as for other helping professionals. It serves as both a standalone qualification and a means to further enhance supervision skills.

Assessment method

Assessment for this course includes a methodology and philosophy of supervision essay, a live skills assessment, and a final thirty-minute transcribed recording. This recording is accompanied by a process commentary and a practice evaluation, all of which are embedded in a portfolio. The portfolio will document practice hours, demonstrate knowledge, and reflect on your development.
