Top 20 in the UK for Physics (Guardian University Guide 2025) 7th in the UK for our research environment in Physics in REF 2021 (Times Higher Education) This course – delivered by our expert faculty – gives you a sound footing for further studies in this field. Our research lies at the forefront of fundamental physics, and this MSc allows you to explore modern experimental and theoretical particle physics. You can choose to take an experimental or theoretical focus, through subjects such as:

  • the theoretical understanding of space, time and matter
  • analysing the results of world-leading particle physics experiments
  • data-intensive science and machine learning.
The Department is a founder member of SEPnet, the South East Physics Network of physics departments, which supports vital research, teaching and development in the South East. We understand that deciding where and what to study is a very important decision. Entry requirements

You should normally have an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree or above. Your qualification should be in a physics- or mathematics-based subject including a strong background in modern physics subject such as quantum mechanics and electrodynamics. You may also be considered for the course if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing.
