Course summary

Overview Our flagship Physics Master’s course is a highly flexible degree programme, allowing you to explore physics in greater depth -whether for personal interest or as a pathway to a career as a professional scientist. Alongside core modules, you’ll have the freedom to tailor your studies to your interests with a wide range of optional modules, covering advanced areas such as astrophysics, quantum physics, geophysics, fluid mechanics, and computing. You’ll develop essential skills in mathematics, communication, and teamwork, preparing you for a career in science or a range of other industries. You'll also gain expertise in research, problem-solving, and computing - skills which are highly valued by employers. In both your third and fourth years, you’ll undertake research projects which align with your interests. Many students use these projects to explore the research specialisms of our staff, while others pursue their own ideas. You’ll have the exciting option to collaborate on a medical physics project with the hospital next to campus. Your fourth-year project can build on your third-year research or focus on a completely new topic, giving you the flexibility to shape your academic journey to your passions and career aspirations. With small class sizes and a supportive academic environment, you’ll build close relationships with our friendly and approachable staff. You’ll also benefit from our world-class facilities, including advanced science laboratories and high-tech equipment. Through hands-on experiments, you’ll develop a deeper practical understanding of physics, making your studies even more engaging. Modules

In your first year, you’ll be given a foundation in a broad range of physics topics, including quantum mechanics, astrophysics, mathematics and relativity. You’ll build on this basis in your second year with teaching in intermediate physics topics and advanced mathematics, while beginning to customise your degree with a number of optional modules in diverse fields. You can choose to complement your compulsory modules with a focus on electronics, energy, oceans, tectonics or meteorology. In your third year, you’ll have an even greater choice of modules to study alongside advanced physics topics and an independent research project. This MPhys degree culminates in a fourth and final year which allows you to tackle advanced, Masters level topics through modules and a dissertation in cutting-edge physics.

GCSE Requirements: GCSE English Language grade 4 or C and GCSE Mathematics grade 4 or C. Additional fee information

Tuition fees increase annually for all students in subsequent years of study. Any fee increase is based on the fee for the year that you register. Home undergraduate fees, whose rates are regulated by the UK Government, will be amended in line with any alteration advised by the UK Government. Fees not regulated by the UK Government will increase by a maximum of 4% or RPI-X whichever is the higher. RPI-X is the Retail Prices Index excluding mortgage interest.
