Course summary

MA (Master of Arts) Our innovative postgraduate filmmaking programmes blend film theory and practice at an advanced level. You’ll explore documentary, fiction, artists’ film, and multi-channel installations alongside students from around the world. The MA Filmmaking at UEL offers a unique opportunity to develop both your creative vision and technical expertise. This Master’s degree in filmmaking is ideal for graduates in film studies, cultural and media studies, humanities, social sciences, art, and design. Many of our students produce outstanding films during their time with us on the MA Filmmaking course. You’ll learn in a creative, collaborative environment, benefiting from leading film practitioners, theorists, and historians. Our strong industry links connect you to both the film industry and the art world. MFA (Master of Fine Arts) The MFA Filmmaking is a step up from the MA Filmmaking at UEL. You can also apply if you have an MA in Film or a related moving image discipline. Both filmmaking programmes focus on creating a high-quality film in one of the following: Documentary Narrative film Video installation Animation Your final film will be ready for festivals, broadcast, VOD, or gallery exhibitions.

Assessment method

Coursework will include individual or group-based films (75%) , and individual written assignment( 25%) You'll receive written feedback, outlining your strengths and how you can improve. We aim to provide feedback on assessments within 15 working days.


Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree with minimum Second Class (2:2) or equivalent in Humanities, Social Science or Art/Design related subject, with preference to Film, Media and Arts. We accept a wide range of European and international qualifications in addition to A-levels, the International Baccalaureate and BTEC qualifications.
