Course summary

People and societies are shaped by many factors. Studying History and Psychology will provide complementary insights into why people, historically and now, think, act and behave the way they do. On this British Psychological Society accredited degree you will learn to take a scientific approach to understanding the mind, emotions, and actions. You will apply this as you explore historical change, learning about the sources of significant events from a global perspective, as well as about up-to-date theories explaining behaviour. The interconnected perspectives offered by this course will enable you to pursue a career in science, arts or related fields. Why choose this course?

  • This programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society, subject to passing your final year project and achieving a minimum 2:2 degree award
  • Gain insight into various eras, cultures, and society, building a foundation of knowledge and providing a broad interpretation of history
  • Learn to critically evaluate and reflect on historical events and how these have impacted the world we live in, supported by inspiring teachers
  • Develop highly transferable graduate employability skills to pursue a broad range of careers in health, business, service and education
  • Broaden your horizons by spending a semester or year studying abroad
History and Psychology combines the study of the past and the human mind and behaviour. You will explore the social, economic, political, and cultural forces that have shaped global history as well as the biological influences and social pressures that affect how people think, act, and feel. Psychology underpins all that we are and everything we do. History at Keele is taught by academics who are active researchers and experts across a diverse range of fields (from political, social, economic and cultural history to the history of gender, health, sexuality and religion) and periods (from late-antiquity to the present day). You will develop your knowledge, critical thinking, and analytical skills by studying a range of topics but will also benefit from the opportunity to specialise in areas that align to your personal interests and career aspirations. This will enable you to trace the course of change in key areas of human history and appreciate the impact of events, forces, and processes on individual societies and the world as a whole. Psychology will equip you with a well-rounded education and in addition to studying the principal areas specified by the British Psychological Society (BPS) curriculum, you will have the opportunity to tailor your degree to reflect your career aspirations and interests. Principle areas of psychology include: biological, cognitive, social and developmental psychology as well as individual differences and historical issues. You will gain fundamental scientific skills in research design, statistics, qualitative and survey methods. With this knowledge, you will learn how to conduct research and critically analyse that of others.
