Course summary

The Cert HE Commercial Dance programme is an exciting one-year, practical training course which has been designed by professional dance practitioners to introduce and develop the skills and knowledge required to become a commercial dance performer, choreographer, practitioner and/or teacher. The programme offers a unique opportunity to undertake a course which synthesises technical training, creative workshops, performance opportunities, academic and industry skills. In addition to continuous training in Commercial Techniques and Performance, other styles/techniques in Contemporary, Ballet and Jazz will underpin technical and artistic skills and provide the knowledge required to progress skills to a higher level. You will be encouraged to explore commercial dance performance creative processes in-line with the demands of the commercial industry. You will experience a range of creative and collaborative projects led by our teaching staff who are industry experienced, having worked in the dance sector for many years as performers, choreographers, and dance facilitators. The Cert HE Commercial Dance programme is delivered within the Performance Academy, one of the most comprehensive training environments in the UK with state-of-the-art facilities including nine full size dance and acting studios, the 250 seat Peter Sarah Theatre, a studio theatre, radio station, editing suite, recording studios and a music venue. As part of our CertHE Commercial Dance programme work ready guarantee we have strong links established with dance agencies, dance companies and commercial based practitioners working regionally and nationally. As a result, there are a variety of opportunities throughout the year for you to participate in which mirror current industry practices and your understanding of the commercial dance industry. This course is ideally suited to students who will thrive following an intensive practical commercial dance training regime and who are interested in developing their skills within commercial dance techniques. You should be inquisitive in the development of your creative and leadership abilities as performers and choreographers. So if you have a passion for commercial dance and are prepared to experience a range of related dance styles, techniques and processes then this is the course for you. Previous students have had successful careers in both the commercial and contemporary industries, working within performance, choreography, teaching and dance production, in addition to related careers in the creative arts and leisure industries, notably fitness / personal training, events management and sports studies.

Assessment method

The Commercial Dance programme operates through a varied and challenging timetable inclusive of practical technique classes, performance workshops, industry observations, seminars, formal lectures, classroom activities and self-directed training, rehearsal and study. Assessment methods include set practical technique exercises, performance projects, collaborative practical tasks, academic essays and reports, and professional portfolios. A range of enrichment workshops and master classes led by visiting commercial dance practitioners allows you to gain knowledge of current techniques and repertoire not directly assessed within modules.

Audition

Once we have reviewed your application you will be invited to attend an audition-interview at the University Centre. Applicants will need to come prepared to take part in a combined dance class which will consist of a Ballet Barre, Contemporary centre work and then a Jazz routine. We would also like to see a short 1 ½ minute solo in a style of their choice.
