Course summary

Are you fascinated by abstract concepts such as infinity and symmetry? Do you want to develop your skills in problem solving and analysis? This BSc will fuel your passion for mathematics and provide you with valuable industry experience. The course will enable you to enhance and develop your transferable skills in project work, group study and presentations, then apply them in the workplace during your year in industry. There's a range of specialised modules across all branches of mathematics, based upon our diverse research interests. Our academics are working on problems that span:

  • medicine, biotechnology and food security
  • epidemic modelling
  • fluid mechanics, with applications in industry and biology
  • statistical machine learning
  • algebra and number theory
  • mathematical finance

Modules

All students follow a common programme of study for the first year. You will focus on core modules that provide a solid foundation in the main mathematical topics. You'll build on your existing knowledge in areas such as algebra, probability and statistics. There will also be an introduction to key mathematical concepts in pure and applied mathematics. During the second year, alongside core modules, you will start to specialise by choosing from a range of optional modules. You will spend the third year on an industrial placement. You'll be allocated a placement tutor who will keep in touch and check on your progress throughout the year out. The final year provides you with even more freedom to choose optional modules in the areas that interest you. From cryptography to quantum theory, or finance to fluid dynamics, you'll have multiple options to choose from. You will do a project module providing you with an introduction to mathematical research and learning skills that may be useful for your future career. Please visit the university webpage for full details of the modules available.
