Course summary

This Masters engages with a wide variety of histories and practices attached to the study of theatre. It is designed to enable you to become proficient in the techniques of historical, sociological and theoretical analysis of the theatrical process, past and present. A key strength of this programme is its flexibility, which enables you to create a portfolio of courses based on your individual needs and interests. WHY THIS PROGRAMME

  • Theatre Studies at Glasgow is one of the longest-established theatre programmes in the UK. Our internationally renowned reputation for research, practice and teaching ensures an ideal environment for Masters study.
  • The programme’s flexible structure allows you to work in an interdisciplinary capacity, selecting options from across the College of Arts & Humanities to place Theatre Studies in conversation with a broad range of subjects.
  • Glasgow is home to a huge variety of nationally significant theatres and companies producing work that spans new writing, canonical classics, devised performance and live art, with major organisations such as National Theatre Scotland, Playwright Studio Scotland and the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) based in the city.
  • Our facilities include a studio theatre, rehearsal/workshop space and large flexible-seat theatre seating over 180 spectators, allowing you to extend historical and theoretical inquiry through practice.
  • Students have the option to undertake a work placement, with Glasgow’s vibrant arts scene providing a range of opportunities to engage with diverse theatre and performance practices.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The programme is mostly comprised of optional courses, enabling you to create your own Masters programme. The programme convenor will work with you to design a programme that reflects your personal aims and objectives and introduces you to new areas of study, concluding with a research-based independent project over the summer. Core Courses Research Methods Scottish Theatre: Place, Politics, and Practices Individual Research Project (Dramaturgy) Optional Courses You will choose five courses from a pool of options. Optional courses are updated each year, but may include: Applied Theatre: Contextual Practices and Critical Pedagogies Arts Criticism Contemporary Devising Practices Debating Dramaturgy Festivals Genders Interwar Cultures Playwriting 1 Theatre Studies PGT Work Placement Other level 5 courses from those available within the College of Arts & Humanities.

International applicants

International applicant information can be found via gla.ac.uk by searching for 'international'. Classes start September 2021 and you may be expected to attend induction sessions the week before.

Entry requirements

2.1 Hons (or non-UK equivalent) in Theatre, Performance, Drama or English Literature. We may also accept degrees in other subjects. We may sometimes accept degrees at 2.2 Hons or non-UK equivalent. Work experience may be considered in lieu of qualifications. A question-based personal statement is required. Please download and complete the personal statement template, and submit it with your application.
