This course has been designed to help students in Cornwall and the south-west develop their knowledge and skills in mechanical engineering. The Higher National Diploma will provide them with an understanding of theory and a range of skills to enable them to gain employment across a range of practice. The course emphasises a deeper professional practice and gives the opportunity for producing an appropriate portfolio that demonstrates a growing professional expertise. The Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering offers students a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning, while allowing for the acquisition of some sector-specific skills and experience through the specialist units in each pathway, with the opportunity to pursue a particular interest through the appropriate selection of optional units. Students will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study, directed study and workplace activities.
