Course summary

The NPQ for Special Educational Needs Coordinator course is a brand new qualification for Autumn 2024. Replacing the NASENCO course, the NPQ for SENCO is now the statutory required training for anyone who is working as a school SENCO and must be completed within 3 years of beginning a SENCO role. This course is accredited by NPQ and provided in partnership with CofE Education Office. Who is this course for?

  • Those who are a SENCO, or aspire to be, in any school or setting.
  • Non-teaching staff who support the SENCO, either formally as a deputy SENCO or leading a particular area of SEND provision.
  • Line managers of SENCOs or other senior leaders with responsibility for curriculum, behaviour, pastoral needs or managing provision.
  • Those who work outside of a school setting but work closely with SENCOs, e.g., in a local authority.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

Entry requirements

An Honours degree in a relevant subject area from a UK university or an overseas university agreed by NARIC as equivalent and subject to ILET and EU requirements Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) Hold the post of Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) Complete the Postgraduate Certificate National Award for Special Educational Needs Co-ordination within 5 years of completing EDM746 and EDM747 or be studying EDM746 and EDM747 at the same time as completing EDM748.
