Course summary

The computing industry needs mathematicians with computing backgrounds. On this BSc Mathematics with Computer Science degree, you’ll study information systems and computing technologies, and graduate with maths, IT and programming skills. You could move into a career developing operating systems, devising stock-control programmes or writing web-based customer interfaces. You could also make use of your skills at a consultancy firm. Use our Maths Study space, with pods for group work, chalkboards and glass walls for writing on, to study with friends and get support from students across all year groups. Furthermore, as part of the Russell Group, our rigorous scientific research feeds directly into your modules. Key features of this course:

  • Develop your skills in programming practice including object orientation
  • Learn to use mathematical and computational packages such as Python and the statistics package 'R'
  • You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures and workshops, by leading researchers in fields, such as group theory, the mathematics of nature and experimental design.
Student Support Your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) will be there to help guide you throughout your time at Southampton. Offering career advice and guidance, as well as signposting to pastoral services if needed. Further information The department is based at Highfield Campus, our oldest and largest campus, located close to Southampton Common. It's the academic heart of our University and home to social events, sports facilities and our Students' Union.

Modules

In your first year you will take modules in programming and either advanced programming, web design or algorithmics in addition to the five core mathematics courses. In future years, you can choose from a wide range of options and study topics, and you will also be able to select an area of interest for your final-year individual project.
