Course summary

Kick-start your career in the chartered surveying profession with this vocational Masters, fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Open to students from any background who wish to pursue a career in property valuation, investment, or development. The MSc Real Estate has been running at the University of Aberdeen for over 20 years, underpinned by our world-renowned strength in the subject. Combining academic rigour with the professional edge, this RICS-accredited degree has become highly regarded by employers throughout the world. Students will develop quantitative skills in economics, finance, and business; gain an understanding of the institutional, legal and policy environment of real estate; and learn about property management, investment, and development. Students will also develop analytical and problem-solving skills in a strategic business context and have the opportunity to network with potential employers from a range of national and multi-national companies. Learning is also supplemented by a variety of field trip opportunities, including a European field trip which provides insights from key players in the international real estate business. In the third term students have a choice of three options, which open up opportunities for a commercial or international focus of study:

  • Write a traditional dissertation on a relevant topic of your choosing
  • Undertake a work placement in professional practice. Students are responsible for finding their own placement, but our staff are able to support and guide you in this process.
  • Visit a range of cities in Asia as part of the Asian Cities course, developing reports based on learning from the trip. Students will incur the costs of this course plus costs of travel, accommodation and subsistence for their time in Asia.
Many of our staff are engaged in active research, ensuring that the course content remains at the forefront of current thinking and gives our students the great advantage of accessing a wealth of powerful data. The Business School is home to the Centre for Real Estate Research (CRER). Since its inception in 1995, CRER has become an internationally recognised research group which seeks to shape the global research agenda in real estate.
